Bare & Core Expression presents a special guest artist residency program of Commedia dell’Arte by Antonio Fava, a world-renowned master artist from Italy.  This stylized masked theater form originated in Italy in the 16th century.  This special guest artist presentation and workshops are part of the 1st Big Island Fringe Festival. 

Colleague of Dario Fo, Antonio Fava's professional career began as an actor and musician at The National Theatre of Strasbourg. He later co-founded the Theatre de la Jacquerie in Paris, where he collaborated with the great French writer, Jean-Pierre Chabrol. Returning to Italy, he developed Teatro del Vicolo in Reggio Emilia, where, since 1980, he has directed and performed in over thirty different productions, touring throughout the world including France, Spain, Switzerland, Senegal, Lebanon, Japan, Czechoslovakia, Pakistan, the United States, Canada, Australia and Great Britain.  His International School for Commedia dell'Arte in Italy is now in its 22nd year. He has taught and directed internationally including The Oxford Stage Company, England, Insitut dei Teatre di Barcelona, Real Escuela de Arte Dramatico, Madrid, CIP di Tremlan, Switzerland, Exeter University, England, Theatre Populaire Jurassien di Lons le Saunier, France, Museo Cassioli di Asciano, Siena, E'cole Superieure de Theatre-Universite' du Quebec a' Montreal, and New York University.

Maestro Fava recently directed Il Turco in Italia and La Gazza Ladro by Rossini for Il Teatro Marrucino in Chieti, Italy. Maestro Fava also wrote the libretto for La Tempesta, an opera based on Shakespeare, produced by International Opera Theater in Citta' della Pieve, Italy in 2006. His seminal book, The Comic Mask in Commedia dell'Arte   has just been published by Northwestern University Press.  His masks have been exhibited in museums, theatres, and universities in all over Europe.

Antonio Fava will offer a free lecture-demonstration on Monday, April 7 at 7pm at East Hawaii Cultural Center.  He will also offer a series of theater workshops from April 8-10 at Palace Theater.  (Tue. April 8, 4pm -6pm; Wed & Thurs April 9-10, 5:30pm - 7:30pm).  The workshop fees are $10/session for students and seniors and $20/session for general.  Each session is about 2 hours.  For general, if signed up for the whole series, the discounted fee for 3 sessions is $50.  Pre-registration is required for workshops.  Limited space is available. 

A special performance by Antonio Fava will be held on Friday, April 11 at Palace Theater at 7:30pm.  Pulcinella’s War, subtitled “The Life, Death and Resurrection of Pulcinella, who sent to War for Love,” this commedia dell’arte production features Antonio Fava and Merve Engin.  The two will give life to this great masked art form.  Advance ticket prices are $15 for general, $10 for students and seniors.  At the door, it’ll be $20 for general and $10 for students and seniors.  Tickets can be purchased online at our website with credit card, or ticket outlets at Basically Books and Keaau Natural Foods.

The special guest artist workshops are supported in part by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through appropriations from the Legislature of the State of Hawaii and by the National Endowment for the Arts.
